Beesley Recalled to Stricken U's Squad

Posted on: Thu 03 Dec 2009

Mark Beesley has been recalled 48 hours early from his loan at Chester City, which was due to end after Saturday's fixtures.

The striker trained with the U's squad this morning, but a number of players were missing through illness and injury.

Dan Gleeson remains sidelined by a calf injury and is unlikely to feature on Saturday at Eastbourne, while Anthony Tonkin is still suffering from the virus that kept him out of Tuesday's match at home to Chester and is also rated very unlikely to play at the weekend after seeing the club doctor today.

Also ill and missing from training today were Paul Carden, Danny Potter and Danny Crow. Carden is expected to play on Saturday at Eastbourne and Potter is also likely to make it, while Crow, who suffered cramp in the closing stages of Tuesday's win but still managed to score the last-minute goal, is rated only 50/50.

Rory McAuley had to be substituted before half-time on Tuesday with a cut above his eye but he is fully recovered and will continue at right-back in place of Gleeson, while Wayne Hatswell is available again after serving a one-match suspension.

"We've been lucky and had a good run without injuries but now we've got a few problems with injuries and illness as well," said Martin Ling.

"If Tonkin doesn't make it - and he's seen the doctor today and he's not good - then Darryl Coakley and Rory McAuley will continue as the fullbacks like they did on Tuesday. We did well with a young back four and kept a clean sheet for the first time in a few games.

"At the start of the season it looked like quite a thin squad, but now the young lads are looking like real prospects and it's getting to the stage where they're putting real pressure on the people ahead of them and being successful when called upon," he added.
