Cambridge United's scholars were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup in the second round at Tranmere Rovers this evening.

Two minutes after United had a shot tipped onto the bar, Tranmere took the lead on 42 when Tom Baker scored the first goal conceded by United in the FA Youth Cup this season.

On 52 the young U's had a shot cleared off the line and it proved doubly costly three minutes later when Baker scored again for the home side.

First year midfielder Chris Tonks reduced the deficit from 25 yards in the 62nd minute and United could have levelled but hit the bar again soon after afterwards, and the home side eventually ran out 3-1 winners to end United's run in this year's competition.

Tranmere will play at home to Ipswich Town in the third round.
