Brian Saah felt that despite Kettering's rearguard action on Saturday, United deserved a point from the game.
After Wayne Hatswell's third minute own goal the Poppies sat back to defend and slow the game down, and Anthony Elding clinched the win in stoppage time just moments after Danny Crow's close-range shot was saved by Lee Harper, who has been appointed as successor to departing manager Mark Cooper.
"You can't argue that defensively Kettering did well today; they played to the conditions and after getting the goal so early they sat back and soaked up most of the pressure," commented Saah.
"We are disappointed that we didn't create any real clear-cut chances to win the game, but I think we did enough to get a point over the ninety minutes.
"Danny Crow had a great chance at the end but their keeper made a fantastic reflex save. If that had gone in they wouldn't be hitting us on the break and getting the second.
"At that stage of the game you would rather chase the point and run the risk of losing two-nil whilst trying to get the equaliser. It's better than sitting back and taking a one-nil defeat."
United now travel to Luton Town on Saturday and Saah knows it will be another big test for the U's against another of the sides higher up the table: "It will be a big game but that's what we are here, to play in the big games; it has to be seen as an opportunity to get back on track.
"We have a full weeks training ahead of us and we can use that to go to Kenilworth Road in a positive mode and get a result. Luton will be under a lot of pressure from their support to win the match and that is something that we can use to our advantage," he said.
"We need to do the basics right, be solid and push on from there."
