Crow: "I Don't Start Scoring 'til October!"

Posted on: Mon 12 Oct 2009

Danny Crow produced a pinpoint finish to complete United's 4-0 win against Ebbsfleet on Saturday and hopes he can now go on a run of goals.

The striker's precise finish came after Lee Phillips' volley had cannoned back off the bar and took his tally for the season to three goals, and the 23-year-old revealed that October is when he usually hits goalscoring form.

Courtney Pitt opened the scoring in first half stoppage time with a rare header from Chris Holroyd's cross, and Crow revealed, "The boys are laughing about Courtney's goal because he has just had a haircut and then he scores one with his head. We can't imagine he scores a lot of headers but we needed that at a vital time."

It was United's first win in five matches and Danny said the team were anxious to return to winning ways: "It has been frustrating for the lads with the performances of late, particularly the Grays result. We went there fully thinking we could get something out of the game but we lost two-nil, and then at Histon we were one-nil up and we should have won as well.

"So this week has been really hard because we have been waiting to get out on the pitch and put what we hope will be a winning result together.

"Ebbsfleet competed really well up until half time but following Courtney's goal and coming out for the second half I thought we had too much for them to deal with. They had to change from the 4-5-1 that they had used quite well and change things to try and get a result. That left them open and we used Courtney and Robbie's pace to punish them."

After Chris Holroyd and Robbie Willmott had extended United's lead during the second half, Crow capped the performance with a perfectly-placed stoppage time shot after Lee Phillips' volley hit the bar and rebounded to him.

Happy to describe the goal, he said, "Lee's shot dropped to me after nearly breaking the bar and I took a touch, and to be honest Courtney was calling for it in the middle but the defender stood off me. I looked up and I scored a similar one against Yeovil a couple of years back so I thought 'let's do it'.

"I try it in training all the time and the lads get a bit frustrated with me but it came off this time and I'm relieved to get the goal and play a part in getting the win. Lance Cronin is a good keeper," he added.

"I've come up against him a few times for Norwich reserves when he was in Spurs' second string and we had a few battles, so it's nice to get one over him.

"It's been frustrating for me because I know I can score goals and I don't really think I've shown a lot of people that, but if you look at my stats over the years I don't usually start scoring until October. So touch wood I can go on a bit of a run now and the team can pick up the wins on the way!"
