Fallon: "We Missed Our Chances"

Posted on: Mon 05 Oct 2009

Histon manager Steve Fallon was delighted to see his side score a late equaliser to earn a point against United in Sunday's derby encounter, but he felt the Stutes should have made the most of their first half chances.

With United below par in the first half, Fallon said, "I thought we played very well in the first half and totally dominated but we missed our chances, which we know can come back to haunt you.

"We had another good two or three chances at the start of the second half, and then they got on top and had a very good spell for 20 minutes when we just couldn't get out or hold the ball up, and obviously the pressure finally told when they scored."

With both goalkeepers on top form a goal looked increasingly unlikely until Chris Holroyd put United ahead with nine minutes remaining after a short corner routine, and when Danny Potter made another superb save to push a free kick behind in the 90th minute it looked as though the U's would leave with all three points, but at Matt Langston forced home the resulting corner to give Histon a share of the points.

Fallon continued, "We showed a little bit of character to come back, but we're very disappointed not to have won the game. Having said that, when you're 1-0 down with no minutes to go, then you'll take a draw.

"I think both goalkeepers were magnificent; they were making very good saves and it was a very good game for a derby. I think you can say a draw is probably a fair result but we need to stick those chances away because they were good chances."

Histon started in a 4-3-3 formation with Danny Wright leading the line and former U's midfielder Josh Simpson in an advanced role behind him, and Fallon added, "I think they struggled a bit with that but Danny didn't quite reach the heights he did the other night, but he was strong and it was a very good all-round performance.

"We just need to work on that 20-minute spell when we allowed them to get on top and we seemed to panic a little bit on the ball.

"They got the ball out to their wide players and upped the tempo in that spell and their crowd got behind them and there were a few scrambles, but we always looked dangerous on the break. So we're pleased with our performance but a bit disappointed not to have taken all three."
