Danny Crow capped another hard-working performance with his first two goals of the season in Saturday's 7-0 win at home to Forest Green Rovers, and was keen to thank everyone for their support.
"We were so on top in the first half there was the nagging doubt we were not going to break them down," admitted the 23-year-old, "especially when I went through and closed the centre-half down and just didn't hit it well enough.
"But I've been working really hard without getting the breaks so I'm just so happy to have scored."
Danny and fellow two-goal scorer Chris Holroyd were withdrawn with 15 minutes remaining and he admitted that he was really pleased by the response of the supporters: "The reaction of the fans when I came off and was warming down was really nice.
"With me coming here from Peterborough United and not having the best of times last year I'm aware that I have to prove myself to them this season, so to get that reception from them is really appreciated.
"But today was another great team performance; everyone played their part in the win. It was first class today and made Forest Green look a bad team. They came to shut up shop and did a fair job for the majority of the first half and it took our emergency winger Wayne Hatswell to open them up!
"I feel bad that in my celebrations I should have run to him first with all the hard work he had done to set me up. But the celebration was more to do with how long the goal was in coming and just how frustrating it has been not getting on the score sheet.
"It was getting to me in training if I missed a shot, but I know that all the lads believe in me and playing alongside Chrissy who is flying at the moment gave me encouragement that a goal was coming. So I'm thankful to Hats for winning the ball and working his socks off to set the ball up for me to get a sweet connection and blast it home.
"You just don't know what a good feeling that was to see it hit the back of the net," added the former Norwich City striker.
Leading 1-0 at half-time through Danny's long-awaited goal, United expected to have to weather some pressure from the visitors after the break and had no idea they would be celebrating a record-equalling 7-0 win at the end of the game.
"Getting the goal just before half-time meant we knew they couldn't keep packing the defence, so we fully expected their manager to have a go at them in the break and for them to have a go at us from the start of the second half," said Danny.
"They did from the kick-off but when we have Chrissy Holroyd's pace on our side and how they were pushing up and keeping a high defensive line we were always going to have chances. But for a side to come here looking for a point to be leaving on the end of a seven-nil scoreline is a credit to ourselves."
Danny's second goal came from the spot after regular penalty taker Chris Holroyd was fouled by the Rovers' keeper and was not permitted to return to the pitch to take the spot kick after treatment.
"There was no way anyone else was taking that penalty, as much as Jai and Robbie wanted it!" Danny revealed. "The first goal of the season had been a long time coming and I wasn't going to pass up the chance to add to it. But the win was all about the team."

United are next in action at home to Altrincham on Tuesday (7.45pm),and Danny hopes this win will send out a message to them: "I know Altrincham would have been watching us and they know that when they came here last time they adopted the 'everyone behind the ball' tactics, and from what they've seen here they'll go away worried about trying that again.
"We have the ability to break teams down fairly easily - even at Rushden we had the chances to kill them off - and we are well capable of doing something like this again.
"Lee Phillips has had a run out too, giving the gaffer different options, and Mark Beesley getting the seventh goal means that like me he has had a weight lifted from his shoulders. I was really over the moon for him to get on the score sheet.
"You've also got the young kids coming through and for Sam to get his first goals and the likes of Jai playing well stands us in great shape, not only for this season but the future of the club."
Danny concluded with positive comments about tomorrow's match: "We have a great squad here and the young lads fighting for their places and wins like today will just build their confidence, and we can take that confidence into Tuesday night.
"Our first two home games this season weren't good performances but we are working hard to put things right for the fans and we want to carry this on, starting on Tuesday night."
