"Same Again" Says Goal Ace Sam

Posted on: Mon 07 Sep 2009

Sam Ives came off the bench on Saturday to score his first two senior goals in United's 7-0 home win against struggling Forest Green Rovers and he wants to see United do the same again on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Cambridge lad scored his first by following up when Danny Crow's shot was parried, and his second came from a great ball out of defence by Brian Saah that released him to race away and beat the keeper.

"To score straight after coming on was unbelievable, especially after I'd made a dodgy pass for my first touch!" said the delighted Ives. "The keeper did well to block Danny's shot and it dropped to me and I thought 'I'm going to score here' and just smashed it in.

"The ball through for my second made it for me - they were stretched being a man down and I blasted it, and although the keeper got a touch it flew in."

Sam felt Forest Green's defence was vulnerable to Chris Holroyd's pace but also believes that any side in the Blue Square Premier would have struggled to cope with the U's on Saturday: "Although they defended well in the first half, they weren't very quick at the back and Chrissy always looked like he could get in if he was faced with the last man - if he didn't get an offside flag against him.

"Danny Crow's work rate was quality as well; it doesn't matter who we would have played today I think Danny would have been too good for any defence in this league to handle."

The youth team graduate added, "When the goal finally went in just before half-time it was a relief, but we knew it meant they would come at us more in the second half and they did for about a minute till we got the second.

"As much as the sending off and the penalty finished them off, Chrissy grabbing the second goal so early in the second half was the moment when we won the game. Their heads went down and it was our win from then on.

"We now need to do the same again on Tuesday, be patient and try to break Altrincham down and we'll see what we can do."
