"Let's Take Maximum Points" Says Hats

Posted on: Tue 01 Sep 2009

Wayne Hatswell's second half header at Rushden & Diamonds preserved Cambridge United's unbeaten away record by earning his side a 1-1 draw.

The home side's Jamie Stuart had volleyed the Diamonds ahead at a 58th minute corner but five minutes later Hatswell glided into the box to head Jai Reason's free kick inside the far post to open his goal tally for the season.

Hatswell joined the U's from Rushden and Diamonds in January and he admitted, "All the old clichés come out about going back to your old club and scoring, but it was just nice to see it go in and get us a well deserved point."

Like his manager Martin Ling, 34-year-old Hats felt United had the better of the game and added, "I'm trying to think how many chances did they have other than the goal? We probably could have done better with that and we're annoyed because it was a set play, and Pottsy tipped one round the post, but other than that I can't really remember them having a chance.

"But they're dogged and they keep going and they're not bad at home. They've improved in the summer and they like to pass it; I'm sure it was a good entertaining game and I thought we played well. We're pleased to have picked up a point here because I think a lot of teams will come here and struggle."

Hats was delighted to score his first goal of the season in front of the 1,088 travelling supporters, who were behind the goal he scored in and gave the team magnificent support from start to finish: "They never cease to amaze me here.

"The last couple of seasons we've scored last minute winners here and we've always seemed to score at that end, so I fancied us to score at that end although I didn't think it would be the equaliser. But it's nice to score in front of the fans."

Celebrating Wayne Hatswell's goal at Rushden

United took four points from their two Bank Holiday weekend fixtures and Hatswell wants a further six from the next two games at home to Forest Green and Altrincham: "This keeps our little run going and we need to keep building on that.

"We've got two home games now and we need maximum points from them, but as long as we stay in the pack and be resilient away from home and win our home games you never know."

United are next in action at home to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday (3pm) and again on Tuesday 8th September at home to Altrincham (7.45pm).
