Ling to Keep Faith with Winning Side?

Posted on: Mon 31 Aug 2009

Martin Ling wants his players to follow up Saturday's first home win of the season with a continuation of this season's good away form at Rushden & Diamonds today.

Today's hosts are are currently 14th in the table with eight points from six games, while United are sixth with ten points from six outings following Saturday's welcome win.

The U's are unbeaten on the road this season, following wins at Ebbsfleet and Chester and a draw at Tamworth, while the Diamonds overcame an opening day defeat at home to Salisbury to win their next two home games 2-1 and 4-2 against Hayes & Yeading and Forest Green Rovers respectively.

Our online betting partners bet365 find it impossible to split the sides, with both priced at 13/8 for the win and the draw at 23/10. Click here for all the match odds.

Team News

Ling has the same squad available after they came through Saturday's game unscathed, and he could name the same side for the third successive match after an improved performance and win on Saturday.

"We had them in on Sunday for a stretch and to see how they all were and they're all fine and available for the squad today," he confirmed.

"I thought at Tamworth the lads worked hard without much success on the ball, but I gave them a vote of confidence and that proved to be the right thing for Saturday; Danny Crow linked well with Chris Holroyd, Andy Parkinson made one, scored one and had a decent game, and so did Jai Reason who people had been saying was looking a bit wobbly in recent games.

Jai Reason

"I thought they deserved another crack at it and they got their just desserts with a 3-0 win. Now it's straight back into action after a positive result. It was important to win that home game after no goals and no points in the first two home games, but now we're back on the road where we've been quite successful in our first three games.

"It's a case of building blocks and today could be a chance for another building block."

The Other Side

On Saturday Rushden lost 2-1 at Stevenage and played with ten men for 70 minutes after defender Michael Corcoran was sent off, and he will miss today's match through suspension while former U Rob Wolleaston is sidelined following a knee cartilage operation.

"They've been a very up and down team so far this season but they've got a good manager and a good ground with good facilities," said Ling. "I played with Justin Edinburgh and I know how his teams look to play, and it will be a good contest against a team who were in and around the top of the league last season."

Whilst looking for the players to extend their good away form, the U's boss also hopes the supporters will keep up their own fine form on the road.

"The away support has been superb and I know we'll have a few more there today so that will add to the atmosphere. I'm sure they'll be trying to make it feel like a home game for us to play in."
