Gateshead manager Ian Bogie was unhappy with his team's overall performance in their 3-0 defeat at the R Costings Abbey Stadium on Saturday.
Trailing to Chris Holroyd's first half goal, the visitors fell further behind when Andy Parkinson pounced on a rebound and then Holroyd stepped up to score in the last minute from the penalty spot to seal United's first home points of the season.
"The performance wasn't acceptable, we didn't do well enough, and I can't really recall any good moments in the game for us," said Bogie afterwards.
"We didn't work the goalkeeper, we didn't keep the ball enough and it's hard enough playing Cambridge with eleven men let alone ten. Once that happened (Stephane Pelonde sent off 67th minute for second yellow card) we just looked to consolidate and keep the score down.
"What we possess in our camp is a good footballing side and we never showed that today, never got to grips in midfield even though we had an overload at times and we didn't show enough quality. I felt sorry for the defence at times; we lost possession too much in good areas and put ourselves on the back foot.
"Cambridge were comfortable winners, it was men against boys and a comfortable home win for them without them being stretched. That's the worst we've performed this season and if we perform again like that on a consistent basis we certainly won't be in this league for very long.
"We will now have to show a bit of character, a lot more quality and put things right. But Cambridge deserved the win; I can have no complaints with the scoreline so good luck to them."
