Paul Carden has committed his future to Cambridge United by agreeing a new three-year-contract as player-assistant manager.
The 30-year-old has ended uncertainty over his future by extending his stay to June 2012, delighting Chairman George Rolls who broke the news to cambridgeunited.com soon after the end of the draw against Barnet.
"I was instrumental in offering Paul the assistant manager's job last summer and I think he will go on to be a great manager one day," said Rolls.
"I know it must have been a hard decision for him to stay once Gary (Brabin) had gone, but it shows the sort of person Paul is that he's a true professional and he's committed to the club and wants to do well here. This is a fantastic signing for us today to tie him up for an extra two years.
"I think we've shown our commitment to Paul in giving him a three-year contract and he's given his commitment to us, and I couldn't be happier," he added. "We're over the moon tonight to have this wrapped up."
Speaking highly of Carden's qualities as a person as well as a senior player, the Chairman added, "This means so much to the football club; all the players and the young pros learn from him and he's always set an example, even when he was here as a player before he was on the management staff.
"I hope this is first of many long-term contracts that he signs with us."
