Board Compiling Manager Shortlist
Interviews are taking place for the vacant post of Cambridge United manager and Chairman George Rolls has told cambridgeunited.com that the Board are working toward a shortlist.
Although the club does not normally name candidates, some have been seen at recent matches or their interest reported through other sources, and Rolls confirmed that two of the interviewees are Hampton & Richmond manager Alan Devonshire and former Leyton Orient boss Martin Ling.
The U's Chairman revealed that directors have interviewed Devonshire, who led his side to the Blue Square South play-offs last season, but would not be following up:
"We have seen Alan Devonshire, and we are grateful to Hampton & Richmond for granting permission to speak to him, but unfortunately we won't be taking it further."
Another name in the frame is Ling, who parted company by mutual consent with Leyton Orient in January, when he was the sixth longest-serving of the 92 Premier and Football League managers. Ling had been in charge of Orient since September 2003, and led them to promotion from League Two in 2006.
"We are getting towards a shortlist and one of my recommendations will be that we speak to Martin Ling again," George commented.
"He watched our game on Saturday and he's had an interview and his pedigree would make him one of anybody's favourites. He's a great candidate and he's been invited to see us again," he added.
Interviews will continue this week, with the Board aiming to make the appointment next week.
