U's Return to Action at Ely

Posted on: Tue 07 Jul 2009

Cambridge United are in pre-season action at Ely City tonight (7.45pm) and Gary Brabin expects his players to approach the game with the same professional attitude they have brought to training.

The squad returned for pre-season training on Thursday last week and the manager was pleased with their levels of fitness and application.

"The lads all came back in good shape and I'm proud of them for the way they've looked after themselves during the summer," he told cambridgeunited.com

"We've been working hard on our fitness straightaway but I don't believe in hiding the ball for the first three or four weeks and making them work exclusively on their fitness, like some managers do. We've been doing some ball work from day one and I'm looking for quality from them in all of their work.

"They came back in good spirits and we've got straight back into the swing of things."

Ely City compete in the Ridgeons Premier League, like United's development side CRC, and Brabin plans to give the whole squad an outing this evening: "I'll be aiming to give all the lads 45 minutes as an extension to our training, and we'll build up the match time as the games progress."

The squad was joined on Monday by a few trialists and they can expect to be included in either tonight's match at Ely or tomorrow's against Cherry Hinton, which will take place at Cherry Hinton Recreation Ground.
