Cambridge United have teamed up with staff at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute to give cancer 'the boot'.
The football club have donated the boots of striker Scott Rendell, worn in the Blue Square Premiership Play-off Final at Wembley Stadium on 17th May 2009, for Cancer Research UK to auction off to the highest bidder.
The team has offered Scott's boots to CRI Laboratory Management Team Administrator Laura Layton, who has undertaken a year of fundraising to raise cash for Cancer Research UK's work.
"The boots from the Play-off Final are a fantastic item to auction to raise vital funds and increase local awareness. We are grateful to Cambridge United Football club for their ongoing support," said Laura Layton, pictured here with Manager, Gary Brabin and captain Paul Carden from Cambridge United.
Laura Holland, Area Volunteer Manager for Cancer Research UK in Cambridgeshire said, "We are extremely grateful to Cambridge United Football Team. Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute opened in 2007 and we are thankful to Laura and other staff at the Institute for the work they do into vital Research and for Cambridge United to support their fundraising efforts."
The boots are being auctioned on eBay to raise vital funds for the continuing research into the fight against cancer and can be seen on the eBay site here. The boots are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from both Cambridge United Football Club and Cancer Research UK. The auction ends at noon on 22nd June so there are just a few days left to place a winning bid.
Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute is based on the Addenbrookes Hospital site in Cambridge. The Institute is ideally located for bringing together cancer doctors and scientists to encourage the flow of ideas. The new institute focuses on translational research - turning laboratory advances into tangible benefits for patients as quickly as possible.
