Loan Stars Talks On Hold

Posted on: Wed 13 May 2009

U's loan stars Scott Rendell and Jai Reason have been made available for transfer by their clubs but Gary Brabin will not hold talks with any players until after the Play-off final on Sunday.

Midfielder Reason has been made available for free transfer by new Ipswich Town manager Roy Keane, while leading scorer Rendell was one of twelve players transfer listed yesterday by Peterborough United, who will play in the Championship next season.

Both loan players have played key roles in driving United to second place in the Blue Square Premier. Reason's arrival and debut in February lifted the team as they went undefeated in the next ten games, and Rendell has scored seventeen times since returning on loan in November, including two goals against Stevenage last week to book United's place at Wembley.

Brabin is keen to ensure minimum distractions to the squad as they prepare for the final and he confirmed that any contract discussions will take place once the season is over.

"We've spoken to all the players as a group and told them we won't be talking about contracts until after Sunday. We won't be treating anyone differently because we want to focus purely on winning promotion.

"Hopefully we'll achieve that, but once we know our destination we'll be sitting down with all the players who are out of contract."

Reason has enthused about his time with the U's and earned praise from Brabin who said, "Jai has done brilliantly for us. He's a young lad and he has really enjoyed himself here and we'd be delighted to have him next season."

The midfielder is available on a free transfer and therefore able to choose his next club, but the situation with Rendell is less clear-cut because he is on a long-term contract at Peterborough and they will demand a fee for the 22-year-old.

Scott Rendell celebrates his last minute goal

Despite Peterborough's £100,000-plus swoop to sign United's 23-goal top scorer last year, the striker struggled to break into Darren Ferguson's plans and returned to Cambridge on loan last November, since when he has hit those 17 vital goals.

Rendell turned down loan spells with Football League clubs to return to United on a similar basis, but with wheeler-dealer Barry Fry sure to want to recoup much of Peterborough's outlay, a transfer fee would almost certainly be involved in addition to the loan fee already paid.
