Gary Brabin: "Be Patient"

Posted on: Mon 13 Apr 2009

Cambridge United aim to build on Saturday's win at home to Eastbourne by tightening the grip on second place with an away win at Kettering on Easter Monday.

The U's are currently nine points behind leaders Burton with 79 from 43 games, while Kettering are ninth with 66 points from their 41 games and desperate for a win to boost their fading play-off hopes.

United are favourites to win today at 5/4 with our online betting partners bet365, the draw is 23/10, while the Poppies are 9/5 outsiders. Click here for all the match odds including some generous match specials.

Striker Danny Crow is definitely ruled out after suffering concussion in Saturday's win, while defender Phil Bolland has been under treatment for a hamstring strain but was back in light training on Saturday so could be available for at least a place on the bench today.

Having seen his side lose two games in a row, Gary Brabin made four changes to the side on Saturday, saying some of the players were looking tired and some niggling injuries were taking their toll as the season reached its climax.

One of those changes saw Lee Phillips handed his home debut as he and Crow replaced Scott Rendell and Chris Holroyd up front, and the former Weymouth man scored United's equaliser at a corner.

The goal was supplied by substitute Courtney Pitt, who helped to turn the game around with his pace and trickery and he looks likely to start today, while fellow sub Holroyd earned and scored the penalty that secured the win, and he will also be hoping he has done enough to secure a return to the starting line-up.

"This will be another tough game but we've got some fresh bodies now," said Gary Brabin. "We've been able to save Jai Reason, Scott Rendell, Chris Holroyd, Courtney Pitt, Simon Ainge and Phil Bolland so we've got some fresh bodies, which is important at this stage of the season.

Josh Coulson

"Bolly stepped up his training on Saturday so hopefully he could be in the frame, but it's been brilliant to see Josh Coulson get some more games under his belt, which is a big plus for us. We're delighted with the way things are going and that we were able to get people a game on Saturday, and we're still second in the league.

"There are going to be some frustrating times ahead and this is an important stage of the season. There's a lot of pressure on all of the top teams to get the points they need and we'll have to battle so we need the fans to appreciate that and be patient and keep backing us right to the end.

"I just hope we can stay clear of injuries, and if we apply ourselves in each game the way I know we can then I'm confident we'll pick up more points than we lose."
