Danny Crow has been discharged from Addenbrooke's Hospital a few hours after suffering concussion in Saturday's home win against Eastbourne Borough.
Making a rare start up front alongside home debutant Lee Phillips, Crow had a typically busy and bustling game until the 58th minute when he stayed down after a challenge with Eastbourne's Danny Brown and was quickly put into the recovery position.
After attention from physio Greg Reid and the Club Doctor, Danny was stretchered from the pitch wearing an oxygen mask, but this evening Greg was glad to tell cambridgeunited.com that he has been discharged from hospital after a thorough examination.
"He was knocked unconscious and he's got concussion so that means he will have a rest period while he recovers from that, but thankfully it's nothing more serious than that at this stage, " he confirmed.
"It all happened very quickly and I didn't really get a good view of the way it occurred so I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the video, but the players around him said he was completely unconscious afterwards.
"When I got to him he was just starting to come round and he was responding to verbal commands, and we put him on the spinal board as a precaution, which is protocol for any suspected cervical spine injury until you can prove otherwise."
There is no mandatory rest period after concussion, but Danny will now have a few days rest before seeing the Club Doctor around Thursday next week for a neurological check. If that is OK he will do a light gym-based session with Greg, moving on to light running and gradually returning to his normal workload over a few days as long as there are no ill effects.
But Greg warned that there is a chance that Danny could suffer some ill effects for an extended period: "What can sometimes happen is an unfortunate syndrome called Post Concussion Syndrome, which Ben Farrell had last season, and the symptoms can last for several weeks afterwards.
"So whilst we're pleased that he's been discharged from hospital and doesn't need any immediate medical attention, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's fine to go straight back into training and match play. We'll assess him at each stage of his recovery and make sure he's okay before he progresses to the next stage."
