Gleeson Set To Return?

Posted on: Fri 03 Apr 2009

Cambridge United return to home ground for the first time in three weeks tomorrow, when Forest Green are the visitors.

United are currently twelve games unbeaten and have won the last five games, while Rovers have lost just once in their last fourteen outings. The U's are second in the table with 76 points from 40 games, while Rovers are 17th, four points outside the relegation zone on 44 points.

The bookies clearly fancy our chances because the U's are odds-on favourites to win at 4/7 while FGR are 9/2 with our online betting partners bet365, and the draw is 13/5. Click here for all the match odds.

Team News

Dan Gleeson missed Monday's win at Woking with a thigh problem and goalscorer Jai Reason limped off just before the end with a foot injury, but both players trained with the squad yesterday and as long as there is no reaction to today's training session they are expected to be available for selection.

"We'll see how they are today and leave a decision to the last minute," confirmed Gary Brabin. "There are a few other little knocks and bruises among the players but hopefully everyone will be OK for tomorrow."

With the team in such great form at present, he is delighted with the attitude and application of the players and the way they have put together a good run of form to challenge league leaders Burton and keep the pressure on.

"The lads have been different class and I always felt we had it in us to have this sort of run. We're in good form and I just hope we can keep it going," said the manager.

He is also pleased by the teamwork, both in defending and goalscoring duties: "The whole squad have pleased me. It's not just the back four and goalie who are keeping clean sheets; the whole team is working hard to keep clean sheets and the whole team is working hard to score goals at the other end.

Gary Brabin points

"And it's not just the starting eleven; the players on the fringes are working really hard too with a great attitude and looking good, day in, day out, and they're putting a lot of pressure on the lads in the team to keep looking over their shoulder and maintaining their standards. They know they have to perform in each game because there's someone chomping at the bit to take their place."

The Opposition

Forest Green Rovers are 17th, four points outside the relegation zone on 44 points, but they have lost just one of their last fourteen outings so they are sure to provide tricky customers under the leadership of veteran manager Jim Harvey,

"We've said all season that Forest Green are one of the best sides in this league," said Brabin. "I know that might sound a bit strange when they've dropped down the table to where they are now, but circumstances dictate that a lot of the time.

"They've got a small squad and they've had a lot of injuries, but I do believe they're one of the best sides in this league."

Brabin is also an admirer of Jim Harvey and his footballing philosophy and added, "He's proved he's a good manager and this will be a tough game. We're looking forward to it and if we maintain the attitude we've had over the last few months then I'm confident we can win.

"It's nice to get back home. When we're winning games at home there's a great atmosphere, and if we keep this momentum going the last few weeks of the season are going to be exciting."
