Learning Centre: Following Arsenal's Lead
Cambridge United Learning Centre - 'United in Learning' - continues to go from strength to strength.
On Thursday 26th February 2009 we hosted our third graduation ceremony for the students from Ridgefield, Bar Hill Primary, Fen Ditton Primary and Chesterton who had attended the Learning Centre during the first half of the spring term.
This was by far our most popular graduation so far, with well over 100 guests comprising of students, school staff and our fantastic mentors. These deserve a special mention for all the time they give up in providing extra support to the students, so many thanks to Polly, Jess, Mike, Steve, Anthony and Chloe.

It was also a great pleasure to have Danny Crow, Ben Farrell, Mark Convery, Mark Beesley, Scott Rendell, Darren Quinton and Gary Brabin.
Mark Convery proved to be the winner of the quiz, although whether by more luck than judgement goodness knows! All the players got stuck into the team building activity of building the tallest tower using dried spaghetti and marshmallows.

Following some family learning activities, the players presented prizes, certificates and CDs of all the students' work. This was also followed by numerous photographs and autographs for both the young and old fans!
Double Club
Another exciting venture that we will be involved is the 'Double Club' project that was originally established by Arsenal Football Club. The 'Double Club' is based in a school and the selected students follow a programme that utilises football to enhance literacy and numeracy skills. Basically the students follow a classroom session (one literacy and one numeracy) using Arsenal resources re-written into a Cambridge United format, which is then followed by an hour's practical coaching session.
Out of the 160 Playing for Success sessions there are only 30 clubs that are doing 'Double Club' and we will be running the pilot project at a Cambridge Secondary School starting this summer term (after Easter). This is an exciting project as it benefits everyone; the schools gain extra support, United Learning Centre develops stronger links with our schools, and for Cambridge United the profile is significantly raised within schools.

The picture shows Jez Daniel (United in Learning, Centre Manager) at a recent meeting at the Emirates with some of the other new centres that will be involved in the programme.
On a final note may I remind supporters that we are still collecting old mobile phones with all proceeds going towards Milton Children's Hospice.
If you would like to bring an old phone in to the club's reception we will add your name to the list. At the end of the year we will hold a draw and the winner will gain a signed shirt and a pair of tickets from the club. There are not many games left now so the more phones you bring in the more chances you have of winning!
