Willmott: "It's All Falling Into Place"

Posted on: Tue 28 Oct 2008

Robbie Willmott scored his first senior goal in Saturday's FA Cup win at Boston, but he was equally delighted to have set up United's other two goals and to be told he was Gary Brabin's 'man of the match'.

Reflecting on the game and his own telling contributions, Robbie told cambridgeunited.com, "It wasn't just the goal; I was very pleased with my whole performance during the game.

"The Gaffer is always getting on at me about my performances and how I can improve them, and I think I showed what I can do and I'm just glad I topped it off with a goal."

Although it was his first goal, Robbie has already contributed several 'assists' this season, not least the superb run and cross for Danny Crow's goal at Forest Green in our previous game, and he feels he is showing the benefit of a run in the first team.

"At the start of the season when the gaffer told me I was going to be starting games it was a bit nerve-wracking because I was only on the bench when Jimmy Quinn was here, but I thought 'I've got to step up a bit'," revealed the 18-year-old whose age is on the back of his shirt.

"I have to pull my weight in the team and score goals and make goals, so I'm glad it's all starting to fall into place," he added. "When you've been in the side a few times you get 'with it' and you pick things up along the way, and the other players have helped me out a lot and it gets easier."

Robbie played the low ball into the area for Danny Crow to put United ahead on Saturday, and after restoring the lead with his deflected shot in the 48th minute it was another ball into the area from Robbie that led to United's late winner.

"I was trying to square it across the box and I sort of scuffed it so it will go down as a mis-hit ball really," he says of the ball that Matt Bloomer headed past his own keeper, "but it ended up in the net and it was really important because they (Boston) just wouldn't give up and it was frustrating.

"A cup run is always important for the players because we could draw big clubs that we've never played before, and the money is a benefit for the club, so it was a good day all round," he concluded.
