With United leading one-nil but reduced to ten men and coming under increasing pressure from Weymouth in stoppage time on Saturday, Danny Potter made two vital saves to preserve the lead.
Speaking to David Gray for cambridgeunited.com minutes later, he expressed his delight at helping the team to keep a fourth straight clean sheet.
"It's been funny for the last four or so games. I may have had to make a little save here or there, but the back four have been fantastic and with the midfield sitting in as well the clean sheets show just how hard everyone wants to work for each other.
"Keeping clean sheets is what we build on to go and win games for the fans and for the manager."
The U's goalkeeper also picked out Jordan Collins for a special mention. The teenager was called up to make his first appearance of the season in place of regular left-back Anthony Tonkin and usual deputy Danny Brown, who were both ill and unable to play, and slotted in seamlessly on the left of the back four.
"It's a team performance but I'll single out Jordan for his work out there," said Potter. "It would have been so easy to have let him go simply because he hardly featured last year and not at all this year, but he stepped up today and showed the fans what we know he can do from the training ground.
"It will be hard for Tonks and Browny to get back in there because you don't want to change a winning team."
Reflecting on the last few minutes, when Weymouth hit the bar and Dan Gleeson made a goal line clearance in addition to Potter's two tip overs, he admitted, "It did get frantic towards the end when they threw everything forward but as a keeper, however quiet a game, you have to keep up the concentration levels.
"But I can't take too much credit for the win out there. Keeping a clean sheet is what I'm paid to do, like the forwards are to score goals. I'm just happy to play my part, especially after the help I've had from the lads in front of me in the early stages of the season.
"In the first four to five games this season I wasn't happy with my own performance and the lads in front of me had to bail me out. Hopefully I've repaid them today."
Finally 29-year-old Potter echoed his manager's words in saying that there is more to come from this Cambridge United side.
"Another three points is always pleasing, but I don't think we are yet playing to our full potential and when we do someone will be due a hiding! But what we do have here is the sign of a good team; we're not playing well but we're keeping clean sheets and picking up points.
"But we are not too far short of hitting our peak and when we do someone will be on the receiving end."
United are next in action at Forest Green Rovers on Thursday (7.45pm). The match has been brought forward by two days to be shown live on Setanta TV.
