Keehan: "Going In The Right Direction"
United bounced back into the play-off places following their 1-0 win over Lewes on Tuesday evening, and moments after the final whistle Lewes manager Kevin Keehan shared his views on the match with Doug Shulman.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion Commercial Manager first referred to the manner in which Gary Brabin's side claimed the points: "We are getting used to conceding goals in the last few minutes. However, tonight was disappointing because obviously we defended resolutely for long periods.
"We also had a couple of good chances ourselves, and if we'd have taken one of those we could have ended up winning the game."
Keehan also rued the loss of his first choice goalkeeper just minutes before the game, whilst reinforcing his side's failure to convert their opportunities.
"We lost Rikki Banks in the warm up which hindered us and, although Dean Ruddy played ever so well, I think it affected us early on. We never really got going in the first fifteen minutes, then I thought we bossed it for the rest of the half and, we had something to build on, whilst passing the ball well in midfield.
"Second half, again, we never really got going but we defended stoutly, and we had to at times. Plus, as I said earlier, we had two very good chances ourselves, and I think if one of those had gone in then, well, you never know."
The personable Keehan added, "We got to the stage where Cambridge had a couple of chances, but I think we had the better opportunities, and unfortunately we didn't take them. Having said that, I wouldn't say that overall we deserved to win."
Appointed to the Lewes hot-seat during the summer, Keehan reflected on the possible medial ligament injury suffered by Kerry Mayo during the match but, in summary, seemed pleased with the progress his side are making in their debut Blue Square Premier season.
"I think we are going in the right direction, and we've got to the stage where we have got eleven players out there who I thought were the right choice tonight, considering we had to make changes from Saturday.
"We are asking a lot from the youngsters we have brought in, and I think it tipped the balance at times. They are good players, but sometimes we had too many (youngsters) out there.
"Losing Kerry Mayo as well was a blow. He was starting to boss midfield and passing quite well, but when we lost him we lost midfield and the rest of them were left in a battle. Kerry has been great for us, it would have been his last game for us, and I had been talking to him this week about extending the loan, but we will have to wait and see now."
