Mark Convery thought Cambridge United may have been slightly fortunate to be awarded a 94th minute penalty on Sunday, but felt the 1-0 win against Grays was deserved.

The U's midfielder was restored to the starting line-up for the match against Grays and feels United's improved fitness levels and effort were rewarded by the result when Lee McEvilly scored from the spot to seal a late win.

"I thought everybody gave a bit more than we have been and that showed in the way we didn't give the game up," said Convery afterwards.

"We were maybe in the end a bit fortunate with the penalty award; you often see them not given and with it being so late I was surprised he gave it. But it was like when Torquay pinched three points here the other week - we kept at it.

"A lot of teams will do what Grays did and come here for a point, and quite often games here will be a battle like this unless we can get an early goal and then change the whole game."

Referring to the players' increased fitness levels and stamina under Gary Brabin, Convery concluded, "We know that whoever comes here and whatever style of play, we can keep going to the last minute. The gaffer has all of our fitness levels right up to their peak and we are determined that games like Oxford on Tuesday do not happen again.

"Hopefully the late goal and three points makes up for the disappointment the fans all felt after that game."
