Little: "Not Good Enough"
Wrexham manager Brian Little was disappointed with many aspects of their 2-0 defeat in Cambridge on Saturday.
A Mark Beesley goal in each half consigned the Red Dragons to defeat and afterwards Little billed the result and performance as "a big disappointment".
"I thought we started well enough and then just gave Cambridge two bad goals and really never looked like getting back in the game and that was the disappointing thing," he admitted.
"We never really functioned, especially in the final third. We were OK for that first 15 minutes but once the goal went in, I don't think we lost desire but we didn't look like getting anything from the game. So we have had a little talk about that in the dressing room which is the right thing to do. Generally today, individually and collectively the performance of the teams was below what we would like it to be," he added.
Beesley's first goal came from a corner by Mark Convery that was flicked on by Chris Holroyd, while the second followed a counterattacking move culminating in a Holroyd shot that hit the bar and rebounded to Beesley to turn home.
"The first goal was bad enough from a set piece, and we felt we should have dealt with the second one so that was also very disappointing," continued former Aston Villa boss Little, who also revealed that United's new 4-3-3 formation caused problems.
"One of the things we have to come to terms with is working collectively harder than we are at the moment. Individually we are doing that but as a unit we haven't worked hard enough.
"Cambridge's new system gave us a couple of problems in midfield and we had to adjust to that, and because of that I don't think we looked good enough in the final third. It's been a big disappointment but we will look to put that right. In fact I think we all wish we could play right now."
The U's are next in action at home to Torquay United on Saturday at 3pm.
