Potter: "A Good Place To Be"

Posted on: Tue 02 Sep 2008

Cambridge United travel to Ebbsfleet this evening, and Danny Potter is looking to avoid a repeat of last season's match when he was dismissed for a challenge on John Akinde.

Potter saw his side go on to lose 2-1 on a cold and disappointing night, but he has high hopes for Gary Brabin's new-look squad.

"I think we probably still haven't played to our best so far this season, even though we've gone out and won four of the six games, and it's a good sign when a team is winning games when you're not playing well," commented the U's goalkeeper.

"No matter what club you are and what division, if you win four of your first six games and you're third in the league it's a good start and you'd have taken it, but we're aiming to do at least what we did last year and it's so far, so good. We've got a stronger squad this year and we'll aim to win every game and go one better than we did last year."

Referring to tonight's match, he added, "It will be a tough game and obviously I have bad memories of going there last season and getting sent off.

"I see their centre forward (John Akinde) moved to Bristol City yesterday and it's fantastic move that another non-league player has got a move to a big club. But they're always a strong, physical team, they're very disciplined and they work hard for each other and Liam Daish, so it'll be a tough game like it always is."

During the summer, in the period from Jimmy Quinn leaving the club to just after Gary Brabin had been appointed, there was intense speculation that Danny was a target for other clubs, which he ended with a public statement that he was committed to Cambridge United.

"There were rumours going around and some of them were true; there were clubs interested in me at the time and people contacting my agent and offering more money than I'm getting now," he confirmed.

"But for me it's not all about the money. I've got a young family, I'm settled in Ipswich, and I've said many times that I've always wanted to play for Cambridge.

"The only issue for me this summer was the stability of the club, that's all, but once Gary Brabin came in he spoke to us all individually and he assured everyone that the club was in a good state financially, which is obviously a massive thing for anyone with a young family and a mortgage.

"That's the same for anyone in any job," he added. "You want to know that you're going to be secure for the length of your contract, but there was certainly no thought from me that I wanted to leave and throughout all the upheaval this summer that's what I kept saying - there was no way I wanted to leave Cambridge United and the money side was never an issue for me.

"The atmosphere and team spirit is great here, and with having a young manager in place and Cardy as well, who was obviously here last year too, it's a good place to be."
