Cambridge United: Going Forward
Further to this morning's announcement, Chairman Phil Law has explained in more detail the planning which has been put in place following the Chief Executive's decision to step down next month.
"Norman has carried out a root and branch appraisal of the Club's non-playing activity," he commented. "We have implemented the improvements recommended and can now face the future, confident with the amended structures and systems we have in place."
Law added, "The Club's business procedures were not the best and our business planning and reporting was poor. Over the past eighteen months we have gradually moved the company forward by harnessing good practice and realising the depth of experience amongst the Board and Chief Executive."
Among the changes made are:
- Restructuring the Front Office
- Reassignment of key staff roles
- Remodelling of the front offices
- Planning of new I.T. systems
- Complete review of our accounting function and the implementation of new, proven procedures
- Agreement of a 'Business Plan'
- Appointment of a new Office Administrator (to follow)
- Appointment of a new Bar/Function Manager (to follow)
- The formalising of our volunteer base
- Outsourcing of the Tea Bars
- Outsourcing of the Club Shop
- Outsourcing of the Matchday catering
- Rationalisation of our cashflow
- Close analysis of our expenditure
- Greater emphasis on our commercial worth and associated income
Confirming that the Board as a whole takes a much closer interest in all the Club's activities now, Law explained, "The local directors in particular are at the ground most days and have each assumed specific responsibilities.
"George Rolls deals with all matters commercial, Terry Baker is going to have close interest over the accounting facility and accounts, and Brian Attmore handles the ancillary interests such as Youth Development and FITC.
"I'm lucky to have such a talented group of people around me," said Law.
Reflecting on the staff resources, he continued, "Wayne and Holly have assumed considerable additional responsibilities of late and responded magnificently. Ian and Mick have once again produced a pitch of unequalled quality in the lower leagues. Peter and Jason have been as reliable and helpful as ever, and the volunteers throughout the Club have been fantastic.
"There is so much we can be proud of at Cambridge United in terms of staff and their efforts."
In closing, the Chairman had the following message: "We are indebted to Norman for his effort, energy, vision and expertise. His contribution to the Club has been fantastic and in no small way responsible for the giant strides we continue to make.
"Cambridge United is in great shape currently with a Manager who is 'different class', a first team squad better than any we've had over recent years, a Board of Directors who are hard working and dedicated, more money in the bank than we have known for a decade or more, and finally but probably most importantly, the best set of fans in football bar none."
