Phil Bolland is set to become Gary Brabin's third signing for Cambridge United.
A former team-mate and well-known to both Gary Brabin and Paul Carden, 31-year-old Bolland's professional career began at Altrincham before a move to Southport in 1997 and then into the Football League with Oxford United in 2001.
He made a £15,000 switch to Chester City in 2002 and had four years there, playing alongside both Brabin and Carden at various times and winning the Conference alongside Carden in 2004.
A six-month spell at Peterborough United followed in the second half of the 2005/06 season, before he returned to Chester City in July 2006. No longer in the new manager's plans by January 2008, he joined struggling Wrexham on a free and made 18 appearances before being released on their relegation from the Football League, and is available on a free transfer.
Bolland has made almost 300 league appearances and Gary Brabin commented, "He's someone I've known for a while and we're talking about a short-term contract just to see how things go, which suits both parties.
"I've played with and against him over the years and I think he's a quality signing. We're a bit light in that position and he's someone I've monitored for a while."
