Bimmo's Back As First Team Coach
Stuart Bimson has returned to Cambridge United as First Team Coach.
The 38-year-old was a player here under John Taylor, Herve Renard and Steve Thompson between 2003 and 2005, serving as captain in his first season.
A UEFA 'A' qualified coach, until today (Tuesday) 'Bimmo' was manager of Bedford Town, where he managed Gavin Hoyte and Ben Farrell. He has rejoined Cambridge United initially to the end of this season as First Team Coach, and he will assist with the day-to-day coaching and assist Gary Brabin on the sidelines during matches.
"I'm really pleased to add Stuart Bimson to the coaching staff here," Brabin told the club website.
"He's a friend I've known for over 20 years, we grew up in the same area and our careers have followed similar paths, and we've stayed in touch."
The manager continued, "He lives locally and he's already helped me out a few times with different things since I've been here. Paul (Carden) knows him too and we spoke tongue in cheek about Bimmo coming on board with us, and now he's joined us as First Team Coach.
"He'll be assisting me with the coaching because Paul has to concentrate on the playing side when we're training, and he'll also be mucking in with scouting so we'll all be working as a team.
"He's someone I trust and I'm pleased to be bringing him back here and I'm sure he'll fit in well. He already knows a few of the lads and he managed Gavin Hoyte and Ben Farrell at Bedford.
"He always gave 100% as a player and he's the same as a coach."
Liverpool-born Bimson's playing career began at Macclesfield and he joined Bury in 1995 for £12,500, but it was Lincoln City that he enjoyed his longest spell, making 170 League appearances between 1996 and 2003.
He moved on when then-Cambridge United manager John Taylor offered him a two-year deal and appointed him captain, and although he began the 2004-05 season out of favour under new manager Herve Renard, who considered him too old, he was restored to the team under Steve Thompson and ended that eventful season as a regular member of the team that battled unsuccessfully against relegation to the Conference.
Released following relegation, he saw out his playing career at Canvey Island before making the move into management with Bedford Town in early 2007.
