Brabin & Rolls on Pitt's Return
Director George Rolls and manager Gary Brabin have explained the background to today's announcement that Courtney Pitt has rejoined Cambridge United on a two-year contract.
The 26-year-old winger has made 118 league appearances for the club since he joined on a free transfer in October 2006, and Rolls admitted he was surprised that Pitt was among the players released by Jimmy Quinn at the end of last season.
"I think everyone was shocked when Jimmy Quinn released him. In my opinion he's the best left winger, not just in the Conference but League Two as well, so getting him to re-sign is a fantastic achievement and says a lot about our new management pair," he told cambridgeunited.com
"With Courtney re-signing and four top additions to the squad with Lee McEvilly, Paul Carden, Anthony Tonkin and Andy Parkinson, I think we're in for some exciting times at the Trade Recruitment Stadium this season."
Gary Brabin returned from morning training to receive confirmation that Pitt had agreed terms and signed his two-year contract, and is looking forward to working with him, starting with this afternoon's training session.
"He's a player I know all about and he's one I wanted to bring back straightaway," he told the official website.
"After his treatment by the previous regime he was a little bit apprehensive, but since the boys have been back in training he's heard good things and realised he would like to come back."
The manager added, "He's a good player and I think he's been a bit of an enigma in the last few years, but I've told him I'm looking to get more out of him and I think he's excited by that challenge."
And removing any doubt about what role he has in mind for Pitt, who has been employed mainly as a wingback in recent seasons, the U's boss confirmed: "I've signed him as a winger."
An interview with Courtney follows shortly.
