Jimmy Quinn signed off from the Trade Recruitment Stadium today and wished the club well for the future.
As previously announced, Quinn and Chairman Philip Law had a lengthy discussion on Sunday, when it was agreed that the manager would leave the club by mutual consent.
During the course of discussions between Quinn and the directors since the end of the season, it became clear that the board's requirement for the manager to relocate to the Cambridge area was an issue. Quinn's family home is in Cheshire and he and his wife celebrated the birth of a baby son in May.
Taking his leave of the club today, Quinn commented, "I have really enjoyed my time at Cambridge United. It's been a fantastic experience and the supporters are great - the best I've known.
"We had a terrific season and I'm sorry we didn't get promoted. I wish the club good luck and I hope they go from strength to strength in the future."
Chairman Philip Law commented, "The board was keen for Jimmy to relocate closer to Cambridge this year but it became apparent during our discussions that this was an issue, so we reluctantly agreed at the weekend that Jimmy would step down.
"When he came to the club we were at a fairly low ebb and under his stewardship the club has stabilised and strengthened on and off the pitch.
"Everybody at the football club owes a debt of gratitude to him for the work he has done. He has always conducted himself in a very professional and gentlemanly fashion and it has been a pleasure working with him, and we wish him every success in the future."
Quinn was appointed manager of Cambridge United on 15th September 2006, taking over from Rob Newman, and guided the U's to the safety of 17th place that season.
After rebuilding the squad last summer, he oversaw United's longest unbeaten start to a season, led them to a FA Cup third round tie at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and secured second place on the final day of a season that ultimately ended in the disappointment of a 1-0 Play-off Final defeat to Exeter City at Wembley.
