Captain and Vice-captain Danny Brown and Mark Albrighton shared their disappointment and their thoughts about the game with cambridgeunited.com after Sunday's match.

"The most disappointing thing is that we didn't play like we have all year," said Danny Brown.

"To come here and not perform to your highest has got to be a kick. There's no specific reason for it - it could be the occasion, I don't know, but we huffed and puffed and we had good enough chances.

"We've played games where we've had less chances and got goals out of them, but I suppose it wasn't meant to be.

"In the first half Exeter played well, passed the ball around and when they got the goal they defended well and didn't look like they'd give it away.

"We had three chances with Mark Peters, Magno and Rob Wolleaston going close with a chance that normally he'd bang in, but it hasn't worked out. That sums up today but that's the play-offs for you."

Albrighton added, "After all the hard work everyone at the club - from ourselves to the fans - have put in, it's so disappointing that when it came down to the last 90 minutes of the season we didn't perform as we know we can, and on the day the better team won.

"I don't think it was nerves," he added, "it just wasn't our day. Our players gave what they could out there and after working so hard all season and finishing second, it's down to fact we couldn't match them over 90 minutes and give their keeper much to defend.

"Everyone is devastated in the dressing room and the heads are down, but we've got to stick together and regroup. The rebuilding starts now and we want to go straight up next season because we don't want this again."
