Quinn: "A Massive Result"
Jimmy Quinn hopes the 2-0 win at Droylsden will give United the springboard to continue their winning ways at Rushden & Diamonds on Tuesday and at home to Stafford next Saturday.
Goals in either half for Ben Farrell - his first for United - and Mark Beesley ended a run of three away defeats and lifted United back up to third in the table, and the manager wants a repeat in Tuesday's "massive" game.
"I'm delighted with the result and the performance. Obviously we needed the win and I'd told the lads it was about regrouping and going out there to get three points on the board," he said afterwards.
"I've just seen the other results and a lot of the results have gone for us today - Torquay and Burton both lost - so it's a massive result for us and gives us something to build on for our next two games. These next two games are vital for us to make sure that we stay in the play-offs and we've got a big game on Tuesday at Rushden, which is a bit of a derby as well."
Quinn made five changes to the team beaten 3-0 at home by Kidderminster last weekend - recalling Danny Potter, Danny Brown, Ben Farrell, Mark Beesley and Lee Boylan in place of Alex McCarthy, Mark Peters, Stephen Reed, Jack Jeffery and Magno Vieira - and he was pleased with the results.
"There were a lot of good performances out there. Yes you can say that Droylsden have had a few games this week but they fielded four or five players that didn't play on Thursday at Exeter, and I thought we controlled the game and perhaps should have got a goal or two more."
Speaking highly of both goalscorers, the manager added, "Ben (Farrell) has been out injured for a while and he's come back today so it was nice to see him score. We had to take him off because he was limping a little bit and just ran out of steam, but it was a great strike into the top corner.
"We knew that if we were nice and bright for set plays, particularly around the box, we might get something today and that's where the first goal came from.
"Then the second goal was a fantastic strike by Mark Beesley, who overall I thought was one of our better players and laid some good balls. A better strike you won't see," Quinn continued. "It was cleanly struck into the top corner and gave us the basis to go on and win the game."
Another player returning from injury like Farrell was captain Danny Brown, who started his first game for two months at left back.
"He's a leader and we've needed him back, and it's great for him to come back," commented Quinn. "He's played left back many times before, and you can see he'll need a few games to get with the pace of the game again, but his appetite for the game and his enthusiasm and determination was there for all to see.
"He got caught out once or twice early in the game but you'd expect that after he's been out for as long as he has, and it's nice to have him back. He's a big voice out there and he's somebody that the rest of the players stand up and respect."
Courtney Pitt was on top of his game throughout and gave Lee Roche and Chris Denham a torrid time on the left flank, and when Rob Wolleaston was pulled down in the area in the 90th minute Pitt insisted on taking the penalty. Unfortunately his spot kick was saved and he blasted the rebound over the bar, but although Quinn confirmed that Lee Boylan will return to penalty-taking duties in future, he could afford to be a little philosophical about the miss.

"I wasn't happy with him taking the penalty and I've told him that, because Lee Boylan is our usual penalty taker, and I've told him in future to let somebody else take it," he stated.
"The keeper saved it and for a striker it would have been an easy tap in but it's gone over the bar, so he's a bit disappointed with that and I am as well, but at the end of the day we've got three points and that's all that matters.
"If it had been nil-nil and we'd needed that for the win I would have been upset but we got the win and we'll get Lee Boylan back on the penalties now."
Looking ahead to Tuesday's match at Rushden & Diamonds, the manager concluded, "It's a massive game; we've got to go there and get the result. They've had some decent results at home and they've got some very good players, and because of the local rivalry they'll be wanting to beat us so we've got to go there and be resilient and pass the ball like we can.
"I thought Rob Wolleaston had a really good game today and caused them problems with his pace and power, and Courtney took the fullback to the cleaners, so it's all positive stuff. We were solid at the back and it was only with a little bit of wind at their backs in the second half that they forced two or three corners, but we dealt with that overall and it was a pleasing performance."
