Daish: "We Had To Match United"
Liam Daish was pleased to get back to winning ways in the league against the "good players" of Cambridge United.
The former U's defender saw his side take the lead at a first half penalty after U's goalkeeper Danny Potter was dismissed after bringing down John Akinde in the area, and although Wayne Hatswell levelled five minutes later and stand-in keeper Mark Peters did well between the posts for United, the home side made their additional man count midway through the second half with a well-taken winning goal.
"I've said in the past it's not about performance sometimes, it's about results," said Daish afterwards.
"Tonight we wanted a result to get us back on track in the league and we got it. We set out to be more positive and get the ball behind the Cambridge defence and ask questions of them, and that's just how the penalty came about.
"I don't think you could argue about it - it looked stonewall from where we were and there was no surprise that a red card followed it."
Daish spoke highly of the way the U's coped after Potter's dismissal, and acknowledged that his men had to lift their own game to get the win.
"You've got to give Cambridge credit for how they reacted following the sending off," he said. "You can see why before today they were second in the league. They are where they are on merit, and the way they worked so hard for each other showed they still believed that they would get the result and that has to be admired.
"As hard as the ten men worked we had to match that, and in the second half I thought we started to control it by getting the ball wide and making the extra man count. But getting the win took a lot of doing, especially against a skillful side containing some good players."
