McEvilly Injury News

Posted on: Mon 17 Mar 2008

Lee McEvilly has injured ankle ligaments and suffered a small fracture at the bottom of his fibula.

The striker was stretchered off during the first half of Saturday's 1-0 win at home to Woking after landing awkwardly when going up for a header, and after x-rays and assessment at hospital the extent of his injury was reported to cambridgeunited.com by physio Greg Reid.

Lee has ruptured the lateral ligament complex of his ankle and suffered a small avulsion fracture of the lateral malleolus. The latter injury means a small fragment of bone has been pulled away from the bottom of his fibular by an attached ligament or tendon.

Greg explained, "He's been discharged because it's regarded as a relatively minor injury with no indication of a need for surgery, and he's wearing an air cast and using crutches.

"The main priority, as in all injuries of this type, is to protect the site of the injury from further trauma and to get the swelling down, and that's what we'll be doing over the next few days."

It is not possible at this stage to estimate the timescale for his recovery. Lee is currently on loan to the end of the season from Accrington Stanley and although it is believed that his preferred option is to have treatment in Cambridge, the final decision belongs to Accrington Stanley.

McEvilly is just the latest Cambridge United player unfortunate to be struck by an ankle injury. In the last two weeks Stephen Reed, Wayne Hatswell and Ben Farrell have all suffered ankle injuries, while Dan Chillingworth and Danny Brown have both been sidelined for most of the season with different ankle injuries.
