Jimmy Quinn was pleased to see his men take three points from a hard-fought encounter that saw Lee McEvilly stretchered off in the first half and was settled by Lee Boylan's spot kick in first half stoppage time.

"The lads ground out a decent result," said the U's manager. "It wasn't a classic game to watch, the pitch was sticky and the surface was cutting up a little bit, and I was pleased we got the penalty to take the lead.

"Woking worked very hard and you could see that on their day they can cause teams problems, and at this stage of the season it's all about getting points on the table. You can play really well and not get anything so we'll take this. It's a clean sheet, three points, and it gives the lads something to build on for Tuesday."

Of McEvilly, who needed attention for seven minutes on the pitch after landing awkwardly and injuring his ankle, and was eventually stretchered off, Quinn was waiting for an initial diagnosis: "We don't know yet," he confirmed.

"He's gone to hospital and there was a crack heard, but it may just be a kick, we don't don't know yet. He couldn't feel his ankle so we'll have to wait and see.

"We missed him obviously, because we haven't got anyone else of that stature in those forward positions."

Quinn sent on midfielder Mark Convery in his place rather than forward Mark Beesley, and explained that he took the opportunity to change the formation after starting with a 3-4-3 line-up.

"Their midfield players Pattison and Gray were just staying forward and getting into the box and we were a man short sometimes, so we just shored it up a little bit by sending Mark on. With us not having a six foot striker to replace Lee, it was particularly important to make it compact in the middle.

"If we'd had another big lad on the bench I probably would have kept it the same, but I just felt that one or two of their lads weren't tracking back and were looking to break into the box and we were outnumbered by a player in the middle, so I put Mark on there and shored it up.

"The lads know that's a good result," he added. "To get three points when you don't play particularly well is the sign of a half-decent team and it always gives you something to build on."

The penalty came in first half stoppage time when Courtney Pitt was brought down in the area by his marker Goma Lambu, but Quinn felt that Pitt should have had another penalty in the second half and that the Woking man should have been sent off for the penalty incident after being booked a few minutes earlier.

"I thought he should have had another one when he got in front of the guy, who shouldn't have been on the park because he gave the penalty away and that's a bookable offence, and then he's taken him down at the other end in the second half and that was a penalty for me.

"I think the referee struggled a little bit to keep up with play today and he gave some strange decision," he added.

However Quinn was pleased to see Boylan continue his current goal streak with the goal from the penalty spot, and was delighted with Crawley loanee Magno Vieira's performance on his full debut.

"Lee and 'Mags' did very well up there; they both worked very hard and you can see that Mags is a decent player and he had a terrific game. He's a very quiet lad but once he settles in and gets used to the lads a bit more there are definitely goals in him.

"He's a strong player and he keeps working hard for the team."

In conclusion, Quinn praised his team for grinding out the win in unsettling conditions and is looking to keep the pressure on leaders Aldershot in our remaining ten games.

"I'm just delighted to get the points. It's not about playing well, it's about putting points on the table and staying in contention. I think if we get another couple of wins it will cement at least a place in the play-offs and that's what we're all aiming for.

"If Aldershot lose a couple of games the gap will keep coming down and football is a funny game; they're not over the line yet and we've just got to keep believing that we can catch them. I'm sure a couple of the other teams are thinking that too but we'll take it one game at a time and try and win as many as we can, then if Aldershot do skip up we'll be in contention to catch them."
