Excellence in the South Stand

Posted on: Fri 14 Mar 2008

This Saturday's fixture at home to Woking welcomes young players from the Cambridge United Advanced Centres, Elite Squad and the Centre of Excellence. Together these centres look after over 700 children who train and play for Cambridge United's Youth Development scheme.

As part of the larger marketing plan to use the facilities of the South Stand for home supporters, a number of initiatives include invitations to Junior U's, members of the Playing for Success Scheme, Football in the Community, local Colts and Mini League teams, and of course the South Stand Initiative to invite local residents and workers.

This Saturday will see the South Stand full of budding young footballers who represent the youth of Cambridge United, plus their parents and guests who have paid to accompany them and are providing much-needed funds for the Youth Development set up.

Head of Youth Development Jez George commented, "We are very fortunate with the excellent standard of players throughout our Youth Development Programme and it is important to make them all feel as much part of the club as possible.

"What better way to achieve that than getting them all together with their families to watch the first team play at the Abbey Stadium? When they watch former Youth Development players such as Josh Coulson, Michael Morrison, Mikey Hyem and Robbie Willmott play it inspires them to want to achieve the same themselves. The Advanced Centre, Elite Squad and Centre of Excellence days are always very popular and successful."

The last game to use the South Stand for home fans was Forest Green Rovers on 23rd February, when we welcomed local Colts and Mini League teams and the funds raised went towards the Youth Development Scheme. That game attracted the highest Blue Square Premier attendance of the day of 4,794 with only one local derby match in League 2 being higher.
