Quinn Still Eyeing Top Spot

Posted on: Tue 04 Mar 2008

Cambridge United could leapfrog into second place above Torquay United tonight following their last-gasp home defeat at the hands of leaders Aldershot Town on Monday night.

The Shots took the lead after only five minutes when Daniel Hylton seized upon a defensive mix-up to score, but in a high tempo game watched by over 4,500 fans the home side levelled midway through the second half when Lee Phillips converted a cross.

However Scott Davies' produced a match-winning volley four minutes into stoppage time to snatch the win and extend Aldershot's lead at the top to eleven points over Torquay and thirteen over United.

"They've done that so many times this season and all credit to them," U's boss Jimmy Quinn told cambridgeunited.com

"There are probably ten games this season where they've scored a last minute or injury time winner and that's 20 points that they've managed to accumulate by doing that, so they're doing something right.

"That was a big win for them, although you have to say they probably caught Torquay at the right time - they probably weren't sky high with confidence having just suffered a defeat at home to Altrincham. But fair play to Aldershot, it was a great result and it puts them on a high."

Quinn added, "It also brings Torquay a little bit closer to us, but all we've got to do is focus on what we're doing. There are still plenty of games to try and win and they're all big games."

United could go second tonight with a win at the Kassam Stadium and the U's boss confirmed that he thinks the race for the title is not over.

"It doesn't matter whether we're playing top, bottom or middle, we've got to try to win them all and at the very least cement our place in the play-offs, but I'll be looking the other way and until it's mathematically impossible I'll be telling the players that we're still capable of catching them.

"I think if we focus on that we'll probably get in the play-offs rather than worry about what's coming up behind us, so let's go all guns blazing trying to catch the ones in front."
