Jack Excited At U's Chance
New loanee striker Jack Jeffery signed on a month's loan from West Ham on Friday morning and trained with the squad that day before making his debut from the bench in the following day's win against Forest Green.
Speaking to cambridgeunited.com, the 18-year-old revealed that he jumped at the chance of first team football.
"When I went into training on Thursday my reserve team manager, Kevin Keen, pulled me to one side and said that Cambridge wanted to take me on a month's loan if I was interested, and I said 'yes' straightaway because it will be a good experience.
"I've been to Hampton & Richmond already this season in the Conference South so Cambridge is another step up for me and it's an exciting opportunity," he confirmed.
"I scored a couple of goals when I was there and that's what I've come here to do; I'm a striker and Jimmy Quinn said to come here and help us to get promotion, so that's what I've come here to try to do."
Quinn described his new loan signing as a player who reminds him physically of Tony Cottee, but Jack warned that he is a different type of player to the former West Ham, Everton and England striker.
"I'm not a fast, tricky player; I'm more one who gets stuck in, holds the ball up, tries to bring other people into the game and hopefully scores some goals. I'm not one of those tricky little fast forwards, but I think I'm effective in games."
Having started out in Sunday League in his home town of Gravesend, Jack joined West Ham as a schoolboy at the age of 15, initially playing for the youth team but soon making his reserves debut at just 16.
"I've been playing for the reserves for two or three seasons now so it's good to come out to Cambridge to get some first team football.
"I've been impressed with the players here," he added. "We play and train at a good fast tempo, and people who think the Conference isn't really about playing football are wrong because we've got some decent players here.
"I know we get good crowds here too, and I'm really looking forward to playing some games and helping Cambridge if I can."
