On Saturday Defender Wayne Hatswell scored his first goal for Cambridge United since joining from Rushden & Diamonds last month, and what a goal it was - a 40-yard free kick in front of the Habbin that flew straight and true into the top corner at the Newmarket Road End of the ground.

Hatswell arrived with a reputation for scoring long-range free-kicks (as well as one of the most famous own goals when he was playing for Saturday's opponents, Forest Green) and he was delighted to score such a scorcher for his new club.

"Courtney Pit was preparing the free kick and I could see the keeper was off his line, so I went to shoot and caught it sweet and it flew in," he said.

"I've been telling the lads I've scored a few like that but I don't think they've believed me till now. I've scored four goals this year already, but to be fair they've been from corners rather than 40-yard free kicks!

"Still, the important thing was the result and the early goal put them completely off their game plan and I thought they never managed to fully establish themselves from that moment on," added the 33-year-old.

"It's nice to get on the score sheet having been at the club a few weeks but the important thing is the three points that puts us nearer to our target of promotion.

"I couldn't care less who scores the goals as long as we close the gap with the two clubs above us. They are both capable of slipping up in the run in and we have to be there ready for when that happens and continue to apply the pressure.

"That starts next week against York, which will be another huge match here and hopefully we'll have another big crowd roaring on whoever wears the shirt. They were great again today putting aside all the talk of Scott Rendell leaving during the week, and I know I speak for everyone in the dressing room in wishing Scott well - we'd like nothing better to be playing against him again next year."
