Wordsworth Is Quinn's New No.2
Cambridge United Chief Scout Willy Wordsworth is Jimmy Quinn's new assistant manager, initially until the end of the season.
His change of role follows yesterday's announcement that Alan Lewer had left the club to be reunited with John Hollins at Weymouth, and ensures continuity and a lack of disruption behind the scenes.
Announcing Wordsworth's appointment, Chairman Phil Law commented, "Willy is very happy to take this on. He's a very experienced manager in his own right and he and Jimmy go back a long way, and we'll all sit down and review it at the end of the season.
"Willy made it clear when he first joined us last summer that he's not interested in returning to management, although he loves his involvement in the game, but he has no further ambitions regarding a return to management.
"He may not have had a high profile but he's been one of the cornerstones of the success we've enjoyed so far this season with his detailed scouting of other clubs and identifying potential new signings," stressed the Chairman.
"He has a lot of contacts in the game and the players all respect him, and they were delighted when they were told the news today.
"It's a real positive from those points of view and also for continuity that he's happy to step up and help to the end of the season like this, and as a board we're very happy and grateful that he's agreed to take on the extra responsibility.
"He's very well respected in the game and I know he will do a cracking job."
Willy is a UEFA B qualified coach with vast experience as a non-league manager, and he has assisted with some training sessions this season when Quinn or Lewer have been ill.
Further reaction from the manager and his new assistant follows.
