Mark Convery's second goal for Cambridge United was the winner in Saturday's 2-1 home win against Altrincham, and the midfielder was delighted to see his deflected shot fly past inspired keeper Stuart Coburn.

"However it went in, it didn't matter - all that matters is the three points," he said afterwards.

"I'd missed one earlier when the keeper made a great save, so to get the winner was pleasing however many deflections it took."

Convery was immediately buried under a pile of his team-mates in celebration and received attention from physio Greg Reid before being substituted, but he revealed that it was for cramp and not as a result of the celebrations.

"I had cramp as I moved forward so the only option I really had was to hit it; I took a touch out of my feet and I was going to hit it no matter what. I honestly don't think I could've done anything else," he admitted.

"Fortunately it took a deflection or two and went in, but if you don't gamble you don't win. After the celebrations Greg Reid thought I been injured by the celebrations but as I struck the ball I got cramp in both calves. With so many bodies on top of me I could've sunk into the pitch though!

"After having a few dodgy results, I think the celebrations show that has galvanised the team spirit even stronger and made us work even harder."

With home games against Exeter and Stevenage next on the list, the Geordie believes the team must improve their killer instinct to put games beyond the reach of opponents: "We have to improve on killing teams off, and add that little bit of professionalism to our game so we don't let teams back into it.

"To be fair to Altrincham, they are vastly improved from the team that we played against at their place and they gave us a good game."

Mark closed with praise for the supporters, saying, "The support today really helped. With the home fans behind both goals it helped spur the lads on when they scored. So thanks to all the supporters for making such great noise and not dropping off when it went to 1-1.

"They played a big part in us getting the three points and it would be great if we could continue having our support behind the other goal as well as the Newmarket Road End."
