Midfielder Paul Carden has rejoined Cambridge United on loan to the end of the season, with a view to a permanent deal.

The 28-year-old spent a month on loan with United before Christmas after finding his first team opportunities limited with Accrington Stanley, who he joined last summer.

'Cards' played in the wins against Burton, Weymouth and King's Lynn and only tasted one reverse, the narrow 1-0 defeat at Kidderminster, impressing with his assured style and experience in the heart of midfield.

Accrington recalled him before Christmas but after warming their bench over the holiday period Paul has been allowed to rejoin United to the end of the season.

Carden is eligible to play in Saturday's FA Cup tie at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and there is no recall clause in the loan so Jimmy Quinn can rest assured that he has his services until the end of the season as a minimum.

"I'm delighted to have Paul here for the rest of the season with a view to a more permanent deal," he confirmed.

"He lives in Liverpool and his wife is pregnant so it's a big decision for him and the all-round scenario is much better with him coming here on loan first rather than signing a contract straightaway.

"I've made the decision he can train up there for a few days and down here for a few days each week. It would be a big move and a lot of upheaval for him at the moment to move house and move his family down here, so if initially he comes on loan everybody's happy.

"He's a quality player, as we saw when he was with us before, and that's what we're looking to bring into the squad. I won't be signing people just for the sake of it."
