Potter Praises "Immense" Defence

Posted on: Tue 04 Dec 2007

Danny Potter kept a clean sheet in Saturday's FA Cup win against Weymouth to help United through to the third round, and he was quick to share the credit with his defence.

"As well as getting through to round three, it's a pleasure to keep a clean sheet - we all know there haven't been enough of them this season," said the 28-year-old.

"Especially when we were playing against the wind in the second half, we knew it would be tough and they would switch from the one up front. At the end it seemed like there were five up front, but we handled everything they threw at us.

"The defence in front of me have been immense. Mark Peters - who must be at least 73! - belied his years and put in another masterful performance, and you can see his and Mark Albrighton's influence on Gavin Hoyte's continual improved performances as he gets games under his belt.

"It's been a step up for'Justin' this year but he's really showing how he's going to become an integral part of the defence as the season goes on."

And on Sunday's draw, which handed United an away trip to Championship high-fliers Wolverhampton Wanderers, Danny commented, "I was at Chelsea in 1997 when they won the FA Cup but I was only a youth team player then so I wasn't in the squad or anything so this will be the biggest game of my career, without a doubt.

"We wanted the Premiership really but we've got the Championship and we'll go there with full belief that we can do something. Wolves are doing well but we're third in our league at the moment so we'll go there with confidence. It will be a tough game, like they all are, but we'll go there to try to get the win."

Danny revealed that several of the players were hoping to be drawn against former clubs: "Myself, Rob (Wolleaston) and Courtney (Pitt) are ex-Chelsea so the dream draw would have been Chelsea, and Darryl Knights would love to have a crack at Ipswich because he feels he wasn't given a fair chance at Portman Road.

"But to be honest, just to be in round three for me is enough. I've only made it to round one before and it's a great reward for the fantastic support we have to get this far.

"Still the third round is a way off yet," he warned. "The money and publicity is great for the club but it's the league that is the priority, so we have to turn our minds to the matter in hand and the televised match at Kidderminster on Thursday.

"Hopefully the fans will be back out in force again. Last Friday we took a fantastic support to Burton but with the Kidderminster trip being on a Thursday we all understand the sacrifices that they'll have to make with time off work. We'll have our minds set on bringing back the three points and maintaining the pressure on the top two."
