Future's Bright For Gleeson

Posted on: Tue 18 Sep 2007

Dan Gleeson has been ever-present in the side this season at right wingback and although the local lad is only 22 he can be viewed as something of a U's 'veteran', having watched from the terraces as a youngster and coming through the club's youth system to turn pro at 17.

'Glees' was surprisingly released by Rob Newman at the end of the 2005/06 season and began last season at Notts County, but was brought back on loan in January and then re-joined on a free transfer in May. Pleased with the unbeaten start to the season, he feels there is more to come from the U's.

"We were pleased to win on Saturday but performance-wise we all know we can do better. We keep going 1-0 down and at some stage we can't keep going 1-0 down and fighting back, but so far we've continue to show great spirit to do so.

"Crawley was a tough game, very hard fought. They'd won 5-0 last week and came here buzzing with confidence, but we had the spirit to match them and win the game.

"We've played nine games so far in only a month and a half, with another three in a week to come, and although we've only got a small squad compared to some teams we know the lads on the bench and in the stand can come in and do a job, which is a good thing that everyone in the squad is capable of doing that job and doing it well.

"Especially with the youngsters coming through - you saw that with Robbie Willmott coming on at the end and he's a great asset to have. You can bring him on at times like Saturday when you are 2-1 up and you can just give him the ball and he'll turn defences and run all day.

"With the youngsters coming through, it reminds me of the time when Quints, Smudger (Stephen Smith), Michael Morrison and myself all made the step up from the youth team together and we know we have another crop like that this year.

"And long may we continue to have such a good youth setup," he added. "It can only be a good thing for everyone connected with United."
