Trialist Gets His Chance

Posted on: Tue 24 Jul 2007

Three players will definitely miss Tuesday evening's match at home to Colchester United.

Trialist Nicky Ward from Welsh Premier side TNS will feature against the Championship side after impressing in the recent trial game (see Monday's article). The 29-year-old has scored goals from all over the pitch for TNS, including full-back, but he is likely to be used in an attacking role tonight.

However defender Adam Davies must have surgery on the knee ligament injury he suffered early in Saturday's match against Plymouth, while Danny Brown and Dan Chillingworth will not be rushed back from the knocks that ruled them out of Saturday's match and Mark Peters (sore abductor) faces a late test.

Jimmy Quinn will continue to extend the players' time on the pitch tonight, as they build up their match fitness ahead of the season's opener at York on August 11th.

"It will be another interesting game and I'm really looking forward to it," he told cambridgeunited.com

"It's good for our players to pit their wits against Championship opponents and Colchester are a similar team to Plymouth. They did well in the Championship last season and I'm sure they'll be looking to do even better this season, so it's very interesting from our point of view to get good opposition to play."

The manager is keen to see United make a better start than they did on Saturday, and added, "I want them to go out and express themselves and pass the ball, and build on their fitness levels."

Luke GuttridgeColchester's squad includes former U's Danny Granville and Luke Guttridge (right), and former loanee Jamie Guy (interview).

Headline summer signing Teddy Sheringham missed their first pre-season game at Heybridge on Saturday with a calf injury and is still ruled out, while Mark Yeates (thigh) and Kevin Watson (rested) will also be missing.

Geraint Williams will give trialists Kevin Lisbie and Bela Balogh another chance to impress in tonight's match, which kicks off at 7.45pm.
