On a sunny final day, United needed to win this match against dogged opponents to have any chance of overcoming leaders Burton.  The Brewers duly lost at Torquay to leave the title door open to United, but Altrincham's dour defending and lack of any attacking ambition ruled out any chance of United winning thematch, let alone by the four goals required to overturn the deficit in goal difference.  There were enugh chances to score but goalkeeper Stuart Coburn and the woodwork stood firm.
