Peter Dobson RIP

Posted on: Tue 19 Feb 2008

The Club are saddened to hear of the death of former player Robert 'Peter' Dobson (pictured, centre) on Tuesday 5th February 2008.

A free-scoring forward who played for Cambridge United in their Eastern Counties days, Peter was the Club's leading goalscorer in both the 1954-55 and 1955-56 seasons. He scored six goals in one of his first games (a pre-season friendly at Fakenham) and amassed a total of 47 League and four Cup goals for the U's.

Born in Frimley in 1925, Peter Dobson was to make his mark as a goalscorer for Wisbech Town before making the step up to Ipswich Town in October 1949. In five seasons at the Portman Road Club he never became an established first team player but made 30 appearances in Division 3 (South) scoring 5 times as well as netting 3 goals in 3 Cup appearances.

His move to the Abbey Stadium was his most prolific period in front of goal as the U's challenged for the League title.

His funeral service will take place on Wednesday 20th February in the West Chapel, Cambridge City Crematorium at 2.15pm.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
