Dan Gleeson

X-rays have shown that both Dan Gleeson (above) and Stephen Smith escaped broken bones in the match against Scarborough.

Gleeson was stretchered off with a leg injury ten minutes from time while Smith limped off with a foot injury at half-time after setting up both U's goals in the first half.

Club physio Greg Reid took both players for X-rays and, although they have suffered severe bruising, he was happy to confirm to cambridgeunited.com that they escaped fractures.

Stephen Smith"Stephen (right) has very badly bruised one of the metatarsal bones in his foot, and Dan has some quite severe bruising to the lower tibia and possibly some ligament damage to the inside of his ankle, but it's difficult to tell at the moment as they're both very sore and we've immobilised them," Greg reported.

"But the X-rays have come back clear, which is the main thing."

The players left hospital on crutches and will report to Greg on Monday, by which time he expects to be able to assess the injuries more fully and estimate how long they will be under treatment.

"There is an important message to come from this," he added, "which is that Dan's shinguard was smashed in half, and if not for the fact that he was wearing a shinguard then he would almost certainly have had a very nasty fracture.

"So to everyone reading this who plays football, please make sure you wear your shinguards because they can protect you from serious injury."
