Parky's Progress
Mark Beesley, Mark Convery and Andy Parkinson have all been through the treatment room in the last week and physio Greg Reid brings us up to date with the news.
During training last Friday, Mark Beesley felt his hamstring tighten up and he missed the FA Trophy match at Histon as a result. However he is back in full training this week.
"An assessment revealed it was principally due to some adverse neuro-dynamics," Greg explained, "but due to the heavy condition of the pitch at Histon on Saturday, it was decided that playing would put Mark at an increased risk of injury.
"The management team therefore decided that it would be the best option to withdraw Mark from the squad on Saturday.
"It was an excellent call, and credit to the management team for having the insight and professionalism to look ahead beyond the next game."
Mark completed a high intensity training session with the rest of the squad on Tuesday without any adverse reaction and he is available for selection this weekend, along with fellow striker Danny Crow who has shaken off the effects of the bug that has affected the squad in the last couple of weeks.
Winger Andy Parkinson underwent an operation on his anterior cruciate ligament at the start of the season and he continues to make excellent progress.
He has now begun the functional phase of his rehabilitation, and Greg commented, "He's worked incredibly hard, and so far he has achieved all of the rehabilitation goals that I have set him, which are an integral part of the 'criteria based progression' rehab protocol that I have developed.
"At this stage, the quadriceps and hamstrings on his operated leg are stronger than his other leg! His running programme has progressed to the extent that he is now able to tolerate some controlled multi-directional running and ballwork drills."
As reported here last week, Mark Convery suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament during last Tuesday's match at Burton. His knee will be in a hinged brace for six weeks and he is spending a few days in his native Newcastle before returning for assessment next week.
"Mark is being treated aggressively with early mobilisation of his ruptured medial collateral ligament," reported Greg.
"Although he will remain in a brace for six weeks, he has been carrying out intensive strengthening exercises in order to minimise any muscle wasting on the injured leg, and he's carrying out a gym-based programme to maintain his fitness levels."
We will continue to bring you updates on the progress of the the injured players here at cambridgeunited.com, and there will be an interview with Mark Convery in Saturday's match programme.
