FITC holiday coursesMore than 800 children took part in Football in the Community courses during the summer in and around the City.

Once again the courses catered for boys and girls and children of different abilities and this summer there were six courses designed specifically for four to six year olds.

During the week the children would learn the basic skills and rules of the game. Many of the children enjoyed the fictional games such as 'Finding Nemo' and 'Star Wars' and, at the end of each day, the children would get the chance to compete in small-sided games. This year we saw over 100 four to six year olds and next year we hope to get over 150.

The courses covered the whole of Cambridgeshire and with over 20 venues many children were able to attend more than one course. As well as four to six year old courses, there were also courses especially for girls, giving them the opportunity to be coached away from the sometimes over-exuberant boys!

There were also specialised courses for children who wanted specific training to suit their preferred choice of position. These courses allow for more detailed coaching focusing upon the finer skill and techniques.

Throughout the rest of the holidays, all courses held a competition day on the Friday. This consisted of all the players being put into teams and winning points through various activities throughout the day, and the team with the most points at the end of the day was invited to our very own EURO 2004 football tournament.

The EURO 2004 tournament was held on at Coldhams Common and around 115 children turned up for this big event. There were 16 teams competing for the cup, and the final was held on the Abbey Stadium pitch.

Football in the Community Officer Stuart Jacobs commented, "This was a very successful summer and the tournament was particularly popular. Every child enjoyed their days with us at Football in the Community."

Details of the Football in the Community autumn and winter courses will be unveiled shorty.
